Black Market Tune is a successful example of outstanding musicians networking across Europe and the globalisation of the Celtic Folk genre. The band brings together many strands of Ethno, American and European folk, weaving them in to a sometimes subtle, sometimes powerful musical tapestry.
Accordionist Colin Nicholson sums up the young Austro-Scottish quartet as “Modern folk music with a Scottish backbone”.
The band was put together by violinist Paul Dangl, one of the key figures in the current Austrian Music scene and a great exponent of Celtic and World music. He is equally at home playing music from the Celtic West of Europe (in various projects), the Mediterranean region, American Newgrass, Balkan & Orient (e.g. with Nim Sofyan) as well as the Jazz & Swing genre. His studies brought Dangl to Glasgow in 2004. In Scotland he found a vital and vibrant scene that juggled all sorts of modernism, with electronic samples, Latin, and first and foremost with jazz.
Colin Nicholson is a rising star of this scene and a pivotal member of numerous bands (e.g. in Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra). His style on the accordion links with playful nonchalance the two extremes of the Scottish idiom, power and softness.
Christian Troger from South Tyrol can easily compare with the best and most innovative guitarists of the Irish-Scottish World-Music scene and has played with many of them. The slight penchant towards jazz in Black Market Tune’s music is emphasised considerably by the vocalist Mira Lu Kovacs, a trained singers with a stylistic curiosity in modern jazz, electronic music and folk.
Black Market Tune is marked by a hearty balance of introversion and extroversion, of softness and intensity, New Acoustic Music with a charming twist and sexy swing. Paying due respect to the aforementioned traditions, Black Market Tune are passionate, chic, lyrical and cool not because of but despite their cultural references. This is music not only for folk festivals but also for the cocktail bars of foreign galaxies.
Black Market Tune plays modern folk music with a Scottish backbone – your feet won’t stand still when it comes to their driving Austro-Caledonian tune-sets, their enchanted songs invite you to delve into folk tales about love, whiskey and emigration.
